What I’m Reading: It Starts With Food

Disclosure: This post may contain referral/affiliate links.

I was sent a free copy of the book It Starts With Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways.  I had heard great things about it but didn’t really know what it was all about. Sounded intriguing.

There is a section on what they call “science-y stuff” which really doesn’t appeal to me.  To be honest it overwhelms me.  But there are some great tips in the book, not to mention recipes.

This book is based around the Paleo diet so not really something I follow as I would consider myself a vegetarian (except I do eat fish & dairy).  They outline a plan to help people change the way they eat.

Their Whole 30 program which the book was based off of focuses on eating unprocessed, nutrient dense foods.  People who have followed their program report great success.

This book shows how specific foods impact us.  They have a section in the book where they go over foods that don’t pass their personal good food standards. Would you be surprised to know that don’t recommend grains and legumes?

This book is more for people who eat meat and will present more of a challenge to those who follow a vegetarian and vegan diet.  But it is my understanding that they do offer options for those diets.

Their BBQ sauce, sauteed vegetable and a few other recipes look and sound great.  I have to say I love their view on redefining breakfast.  Don’t think of meals like we are used to breakfast, lunch and dinner but rather Meal 1, 2, 3.  It really doesn’t matter what you eat for each meal as long as you get the right nutrients.  Just be sure to eat very soon after waking up and don’t eat right before you go to bed.  Simple!

There is a section in the book on the strategies they believe will help you in your long term success.  I’m not to that part yet but I’m itching to jump back there so I think I just might do that.

If you would like to learn more about the authors, Dallas and Melissa Hartwig, you can check out their Whole30 program.

I just finished reading this book and LOVED the science-y stuff most of all! I find the relationships between food and hormones just fascinating and very strong motivation to make changes to the way I feed myself and my family.
I’d like to the the whole30 approach in the new year (once Xmas temptations are finished!). I particularly like how they ask you to add food groups in methodically after you’ve eliminated them from your body. A great way to figure out what works for each of us individually!
