Today’s Tip:  Is Fruit Healthy?

Fruits ARE healthy and important to your diet.  A variety of fruits is beneficial to you because they help fight and reduce the risk of diseases.

Benefits of fruit:

Rich in vitamins & minerals, are natural sources, give you energy, full of fiber, low in calories, fat and sodium and they are fun to eat.

You can eat fresh, frozen, canned or dried fruits but not juice unless it’s 100% fruit juice.  The best thing to do is keep fruit out and easily accessible to you, pack fruits in baggies so you can grab them on your way out the door and be sure to add them to every meal.

We keep our bananas in the fridge so they don’t go brown and they last a lot longer.  I immediately wash grapes and put them in an open container in the fridge so we can grab a few at a time and the rest of the fruits go in the fridge’s fruit bin.  I love my apple corer and once I use that, it’s much easier to eat the apple rather than biting into a whole apple.

The number of fruit servings varies according to the the food pyramid. I like adding fruit to my cereal and especially enjoy bananas or blueberries in my oatmeal.  Yum!  And with my new dessert challenge, fruit works well for dessert especially dipped in or added to some awesome Chobani Greek yogurt.

A while ago, I wrote about the benefits of berries so be sure to check that out.

What is your favorite fruit?

I’m glad the answer was “yes” because I LOVE fruit. Especially cherries, raspberries, and oranges. I love blueberries too…and apples…and melons.

Oh, it’s much too hard to choose just one “favorite.” 🙂

I think oranges but I love strawberries (even though I love them I have to be in the mood for them), bananas, green grapes and pineapple.

Oh yum, I like all the fruits you all mention. Never liked cherries before but now I do. So tasty!

Stephanie, you would be surprised at how many people wonder if fruit is healthy. I missed adding it in the post but it’s because they think the sugar in the fruit isn’t healthy. But it’s natural so it’s all good in moderation of course.

Thanks for commenting everyone. I love to hear your feedback.

Good going. I lost 80 lbs very fast a few years ago and kept it off. Now I am under ALOT of stress and noticed that I have gravitated towards bad carbs again. But I need to kick myself in the shin and your post has helped me to get back to eating fruits.

    Colleen,
Congrats on your weight loss. Being under stress is tough and a challenge but I know you can do it. We have done it once before, we have to just get back to it.

Favorite? Bananas. They’re relatively inexpensive, and they’re filling enough to do a great job of tiding me over to the next meal. I like your tip about putting some healthy snacks in baggies for picking up on the way out the door.

Is fruit healthy? A resounding yes! I can never go more than a couple hours without snacking on an apple, banana, or whatever happens to be in season at the time.
