I’m feeling a bit defeated today BUT I’m not giving up. As some of you know, I have been dealing with knee pain and it’s just getting worse. I gave up one of three days of Turbo Kick at the gym and have decided now that I must give it up altogether, for now anyway. This decision is very emotional for me because it’s one of my most favorite things to do and burns most of my daily calories. But the pivoting, twisting and all that jazz that comes with kick boxing type workouts can’t be good for my knees. I have tried to modify moves during classes but don’t think that is helping me at all. I’m so sad!
I’m looking for advice on what types of cardio I can do to replace it that won’t be as hard on my knee but still give me the calorie burn I need. I will keep doing Walk Away the Pounds at home and will do Spin classes on the weekends. I have heard that the stationary bike, rowing and weight training might also be good options. And of course swimming is one of the best options but I don’t have access to an indoor pool so I’ll have to scratch that.
I have a message in to a personal trainer that I know and I’ll be talking to the lead PT at our gym to see what she also has to say. And before you say it *wink*, I do know that I need to go to a doc for this however at this time I do not have health insurance. There is a doc friend that might be able to help but I don’t want to count on that. We’ll figure something out.
If you have any tips or words of encouragement, they would be appreciated. Off to make a healthy breakfast. Thanks for ‘listening’.
Make it a great day,
Angie

Tough break Ang. It’s a bummer to give up something you love. And that does sound like a fun sport.
Hey, I also know what it’s like with no health insurance. I don’t have any either. GULP. So we have to be extra careful.
If it were me, I would go with swimming but then I’m a natural fish in the water anyway. It’s great on joints although I don’t know if you burn the same amount of calories. And since, no pool, that’s out. I’m surprised your gym doesn’t have a pool. Do you have a YMCA close by?

Sorry to hear it hasn’t gotten better Angie. IM me, I sent you my username and we’ll chat.
When there is a hint of injury, stopping the activity to recover is a better idea than just slowing down. Slowing down is still causing the same stress to the joint and it will take weeks to recover anyway. Especially since so many of us are getting younger. lol
Plenty you can do, yes the bike, SWIMMING rocks if that is an option, the elliptical is good and if walking is not causing pain then stick with that and add incline to it randomly for more calories spent.
Do not do any activities that you feel the pain. Give it 3 weeks of no class and see how it feels. Ice it at the end of the day if it’s achy and take some ibuprofen to get the swelling down inside.
You can still do this. There are plenty of ways to workout. Just not that fun class you were OVERTAKING. 🙁

Joint pain is so miserable. I know this has to be very frustrating for you at this point in your journey. You’ve accomplished so much and now you have pain making you take a new path for your health.
I hope you find a good solution. Not having insurance is probably just as frustrating as being in pain (then again so is having insurance sometimes -lol- with all the insurance hoops to jump through)

I started getting some knee pain as well while exercising, and talked to the exercise techs and PT and they felt the best thing to do was to work my quads to better support my knee. Of course there are various exercises to do that, and some of them can be a bit rough on the knees themselves, depending.

Hi Angie, I have knee pain too, and before I lost weight I hurt my knee so badly that I was sure I needed surgery. Well, to make a long story short, I didn’t need anything, but xrays and an ultrasound surprised me with the results that I only had mild arthritis. So, I wonder if you think this is chronic pain or an injury. If its just chronic pain (like arthritis,) you could try glucosamine/MSM/chrondoitin. Also, I hate to say it, but taking more weight off will have dramatic results with chronic knee pain. I know for sure, and that is why I have decided to get the last 30 pounds off. Well, if I can be of any more help, let me know. I think you were right to stop the kickboxing for now. I think walking combined with weight training should be okay.

Angie,
I feel your pain. I don’t know if you remember, but I was out of it for a good month because of my ankle. Rest is a good thing sometimes even though our body is jumping out of our skin because it wan’t to exercise. I think swimming will help you out a lot and not put so much stress on your knees. The bike and elleptical trainer are much better on the knees and you can make it a intense cardio workout by doing interval training. Weights are also really good and you can focus on your upper body for now if you like… until your knee gets better! You will be ok, I know it! You have a determination that I admire sooo much! Keep your head up, girl. You’ll get through this and come out stronger!

Aww Angie that stinks! Taking a week or two off all together may be just what you need. Have you tried 10 minute trainer? Not hard on the knees and gives me a really good workout in just 10 minutes. I actually feel like worked out harder than when I do Turbo Jam.
Another one is Fit Yummy Mummy. I really like that one and it burns tons of calories and you choose your workouts so you can pick moves that don’t strain the knees.
Anywho, I will pray for a speedy recovery for you!
God Bless,
Kassandra

Thank you all for your helpful and encouraging words. I truly appreciate all of you taking the time to come here and share. I am feeling a little better about my decision today. As of right now, I am going to take a break for one week and do no formal exercise. I’m going to have to change my gym schedule around because I don’t want to be at the gym the same time they are having Turbo Kick class, too tempting LOL and hopefully there might be other low impact classes that I can try out sometime.
I’m so thankful for the time you all took to help me through this. You’re the best!

Angie,
I do the stationary bike and also a treadmill type machine. It has two platforms, one for each foot and it’s slanted upward. In 40 minutes you can burn 400-500 calories.
I’m so sorry your knee is still bothering you.

Oh, Angie, sorry it hasn’t gotten better!
I had a knee problem recently and slacked off working out for a while. It didn’t seem to help by slacking off (of course I was still active, walking, bending, and such around the house). Honestly, it didn’t get better until I started taking something with what the poster said above, glucosamine/chondroiton/MSM product. They’re pretty inexpensive at the store and it might help.
Other than that, if I felt I needed to do something, I think I would choose swimming since it’s probably the easiest on the joints.
I hope you get better soon! 🙂

Thanks Audrey! Yes, I will be doing bike and elliptical for starters to get back into it slowly. Can’t overdo it for a while and I’m itching to get to the gym like yesterday LOL
Jen, I checked out the glucosamine stuff and might try it out down the road.
